I wonder why the sense of awkwardness was felt between my turtle and I. Did my turtle feel the same thing as I did? It wasn't fear I felt for there was glass separating us. It just didn't feel right.
This blog consists of observations on my turtle for a project in Ms. Farias’s AP English class. Before this, I’ve never really paid much attention to my turtle besides the regular routine of feeding it. I can’t help but feel guilty for not even knowing the sex of it; I never really thought about it. However, now I’ve noticed my turtle does more than just swim around its tank… Welcome to the life of my turtle.

The Stare
I think my turtle is really scared of me. I've been observing from a not too close distance but today I tried observing more closely to its tank; right away it tucked its head into its shell. I got on my knees so I could be at eye level and I could see my turtle's eyes just staring at me. It still remained with its head tucked in. I'm not sure who was more intimidated between us, it made me shiver and uncomfortable.

I wonder if he would be less intimidated if you do this more often? Have you discovered his gender? I keep calling him "him" for some reason all turtles are "he" in my brain.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the reason you were both intimidated was it was like trying something new, there was the fear of the unknown plus the nervousness of taking chances. I'm still wondering like how do turtles reproduce with the shell and stuff there?
ReplyDeleteI would think that your turtle isn't used to you being so close to him so he's scared to come out. Before you started observing would he hide in his shell while you gave him food?
ReplyDeleteI also think that your turtle is just intimidated. You're like a giant compared to it so when you were observing him he just got scared. I think you've never really spent this much time with the turtle so you too are intimidated by it.
ReplyDeleteI used to have a turtle too but it died and your blog just makes me miss it so much. I think the turtle is just scared of you or maybe he doesn't like you.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of "Living like weasels," that sort of terribly uncomfortable, connected, one minded gaze that we seem to only do with animals, because according to Annie Dillard, "If you and I looked at each other that way, our skulls would split and drop to our shoulders."
ReplyDeleteMaybe your turtle felt the same way you did? Do you not usually watch it, turtles are fascinating creatures they are so fun to look at. Every time I think about a turtle it reminds me of "Finding Nemo" or "Nemo". turtles are so adorable in fact I think that once you guys get "comfortable" everything will change.
ReplyDeleteThe same thing happens with my fish, every time I try to make eye contact he seems to swim away and it creeps me out after. How long have you had your turtle and have you ever paid attention to it before this observation? Maybe since you never really observed him he feels uncomfortable and weird?
ReplyDeleteSo have you found out what gender your turtle is? and also that awkward stare could also mean the turtle is recognizing who you are. Have you thought about that?
