Mix of Emotions

"Lately my turtle has been very calm and peaceful. I see her stay in the same place–her neck stretched out. Observing. I wonder what goes through her thoughts." Field-notes 10/22

It is so peaceful to watch her, she is so calm unlike other days when she is moving around everywhere in her tank. My turtle's calm mood brings peace to the both of us.

The Peace of Wild Things
When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the
least of sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives
may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the
great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still
water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Wendell Berry Famous Poets and Poems

"I spot my turtle in the same place in the corner of her tank. I pull up a chair to observe her–not too close up. She moved away as soon I sat down. She was facing me; now I saw the back of her. I guess she didn't want to look at me. I wonder what I did wrong." Field-notes 10/25

I thought about what I could have possibly done to upset my turtle. (It seemed ridiculous.) I had been gone for two days because of a volleyball game in Elko. Then I realized maybe my turtle's attitude was due to my absence–perhaps she felt ignored, I had paid a lot of attention to her lately expect for those two days I was unable. My turtle continuously surprises me with her mixture of emotions.

  1. Nice use of the poem in your blog. I like the idea of watching your turtle, its fun to watch one of your pets because you learn so much more about them.

  2. I love the poem and how you use it. I often find myself envious of the "peace of wild things." We seem to worry about silly problems while they just live their lives.

  3. It's amazing how even little creatures demonstrate that they have emotions. They do so with actions in a non verbal manner but it's so easy to catch on to them as their owners. I find it very interesting that your turtle was ignoring you after it felt your absence because your turtle's actions actually got you thinking about the motives it was acting the way it was.

  4. Your turtle seems like a little drama queen being happy then sad. Whats up with your turtle man! And like the poem that you choose it sounds soothing as I read through it. It's really nice. :)

  5. I feel like the poem added an extra push, "The peace of wild things," While we worry about silly things, worry about the future are lives are still going on. However this could be really good to show how much we care and worry about the little things. We often forget to live in he moment while life is still happen and the hints we care about the most don't and won't always care about us. I see were your turtle is coming from, the turtle seems kind of stubborn.

  6. I really enjoyed that poem. It went very well with what you are talking about your turtle. It gave that extra detail about the peace within nature. Very lovely field notes by the way!

And I do agree, I agree with the fact that your turtle might of been lonely without you. Because my dog does the same exact thing with me when I leave for a couple of days. My dog just kept ignoring me until I gave him a treat of course, I knew he wouldn't be able to resist (:

  8. My dogs also did this when I came back from Elko, so I totally understand what you're saying. I think it's amazing how much emotion an animal can really have and share. I really like the idea of you watching a turtle because I think turtles are so weird, but yet so interesting. Great blog.
