I decided to research what other types of animals would get along with red eared sliders. I was disappointed to find it is a bit more complicated than I expected. According to "What Animals get along with Red Eared Sliders" Red eared sliders tend to not get along with other animals since they will prey upon them especially smaller animals. The best cage mates for red eared sliders are other turtles although they can sometimes have problems too. (I remember one day when I had another turtle, I found them biting each other's legs.) Most owners keep their turtles with goldfishes and minnows because they are inexpensive and easy to replace. (That is just cruel!) I sadly found the only way my turtle can have a companion is by providing places where the other animal can hide and supplying both of them with plenty of food. (Team).
I know my turtle would be vicious enough to immediately prey upon other animals. She has an obsession with food. I could never let another animal live in torment and constantly avoid being hunted down.
"It seems like my turtle is successful once again–she has tricked my dad into constantly feeding her. The tank stinks and it is clearly dirty (The water is now green.) My dad is no longer allowed to feed her." Field-notes 11/05
It might be a while until I decide whether I want to risk the life of another animal. It seems like for now my turtle will continue to ride solo.

I understand how you feel because my cat is always by himself and I feel like he is lonely too. Just like your situation my cat is aggressive with other cats(just cause he is a "Regina George"). I hope you can find another turtle for him though. Great blog.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's a conflicting matter whether or not to give the turtle company. If you do, the turtles won't cooperate with each other but at the same time, the turtle will be lonely. I like your tone in the blog, it makes the audience anticipated.
ReplyDeleteI think Alice Walker (the author of "Am I Blue") would love that you are questioning the turtle's feelings. Great blog.
ReplyDeleteI get you because I used to have the same type of turtle once and it was always lonely too. And yes they are vicious! My turtle would try to bite me every time I would take her out to clean her tank.
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean because I always feel like Mellowmoon is lonely but they don't like company. Even though some times everyone needs some company.
ReplyDeleteI try to convince my mom to get another animal in the house because I feel like my cat needs another cat around so he's not so lonely. Even though they are two completely different animals I can still relate to this blog. Great blog!
ReplyDeleteAww turtles are so cute, I'm currently wearing a turtle bracelet too and it just reminded me of it. It's cool that turtles or animals specifically have feelings like we do. It just shows that we're not that different. I hope you do find something that will get along with your turtle soon. I would cry every single day being alone for too long.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting how your type of turtle doesn't really like the company of another animal. Maybe it's natural for your turtle to be alone?
ReplyDeleteThat's really sweet and nice of you, I wonder how my dog must feel I'm the only one with her to watch her and observe her. It makes me sad but pretty cool how you looked it up. Nice blog
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting. I would have never thought of a turtle getting lonely. I have two turtles that are perfect with each other and never fight. I wonder if maybe you got a turtle that was her size if it would work.
